Classic German Martingale with tightly braided rope applies pressure to the bars and corners of the mouth, and provides instant release as the horse gives. A fair assist rein of which the pressure immediately disappears if the horse reacts correctly. This western version has fine smooth gliding ropes for through the bit rings. You replace your own reins for the supplied split reins with rings.

You might see these made in all leather, but I prefer the lightness of the cord used in this example. It has three adjustment points on the reins. If your horse goes past the desired point of flexion, the martingale disengages, and the horse is straight in your hands. This is a popular piece of equipment for multiple events.
