IMPERFECTIONS IN LEATHER
BUG BITES:
Cows have their itchy moments too! Just like us, bugs can be a real nuisance. In warmer climates, animals are more likely to have more bug bites. Ticks, mosquitos and flies can be especially nasty, leaving small circular markings on the hides. These are the most common markings on leather, so you may have seen them on some hides you've purchased.
SCARS & SCRATCHES:
Cowhides can tell stories with their healed scars, like range markings from barbed wire fences. Think of it like the time you fell off your bike as a kid. Not every cow has a perfect life, and scars are part of their journey. These marks can sometimes be seen on the roughout side if they are deep enough. Embrace the character they add!
FAT WRINKLES:
In certain spots like the neck, cowhides can have deep wrinkles, even after tanning. These wrinkles might be more noticeable where the skin is soft and folds, like the belly or armpits. Sometimes, the wrinkles can even be seen all over the hide, including the back. There's nothing wrong with this; it's just that these cows didn't get any collagen injections!
BRANDS:
Our leather, a by-product of the food industry, may have a butt brand marking from the cattle's life on the ranch. Yet these hides are still totally usable! You can even use the brand to make a cool statement piece on your purses or chaps.
VEINS:
Veins are easy to spot on the flesh side (suede side) once you know what to look for. Their lighting-like impressions are seen even after tanning. This is because the veins made an impression on the skin during the entirety of the animal's long life.
